Why CBD for Dogs

Your dog tells you. We help you answer.

Dogs don't hide much. The trembling under the desk when thunder rolls in. The stiff-legged first steps after a nap. The pacing by the door when the suitcase comes out. If you've landed on this page, your dog has probably already told you something — and you're doing what good dog people do: research before you buy.

Dogs have an endocannabinoid system — a network of receptors that helps the body regulate calm, comfort, and balance. CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound from the hemp plant that gently supports normal function of this system. It's not sedation. It's not a personality change. It's the same dog, with a little less edge and a little more ease.

VetCBD's line is formulated by Dr. Tim Shu, DVM — a licensed veterinarian with more than a decade of expertise in cannabinoid therapeutics for animals. Every batch is triple-tested by independent labs, carries the NASC quality seal, and comes with something no other major brand offers: a free product consultation with a real veterinary team to help you get the product and the serving size right for your dog specifically.

How It Helps

Four areas of support — every day, every dog.

Calm & Relaxation

Helps maintain calm during storms, fireworks, travel, separations, and changes in routine.

Joint Comfort & Mobility

Supports comfortable movement and flexibility — for the senior dog, the athlete, and the big breeds.

Daily Wellness

Helps maintain normal GI function, normal brain function, and overall everyday wellbeing.

Non-Sedating Support

Designed to keep your dog himself — alert, playful, present. Just more at ease.

Why It Matters

Most dogs deal with more than their owners realize.

~70%

of dogs display at least one anxiety-related behavior over their lifetime — noise sensitivity is the most common.*

80%

of dogs 8+ show joint changes associated with reduced mobility — most owners notice it a year or more late.*

*Estimates anchored to peer-reviewed canine behavior and geriatric veterinary research, including the 2020 Finnish canine anxiety study (13,700 dogs).

How It Works

The science, in plain language.

Dogs — like cats, horses, and humans — have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). It's a regulatory network that helps the body return to balance after stress, support recovery, and maintain everyday comfort. Cannabinoids from hemp interact with this system gently, supporting the work the ECS is already doing.

Dogs actually have a high concentration of cannabinoid receptors — which is why measured, weight-based serving sizes matter more than "more is better." Start low, stay consistent, and adjust slowly. That's the whole method, and it's why we publish a clear serving-size table.

Our tinctures are full-spectrum — the full range of naturally occurring cannabinoids, including less than 0.3% THC per federal law — to deliver the "entourage effect," where cannabinoids and terpenes work together. Our chews are broad-spectrum (no detectable THC). And our base oil is organic extra virgin olive oil: long-chain triglycerides that research suggests support better cannabinoid absorption than the MCT oil most brands use.

Published research is growing fast — a 2018 Colorado State University study evaluated CBD safety in dogs, and the Dog Aging Project's 2025 study followed 47,000 dogs. We reference this research as educational context, and we formulate accordingly.

Suggested Daily Use

How much CBD for your dog?

A starting framework, not a prescription. Always consult your veterinarian for guidance specific to your dog.

The starting point Dr. Shu recommends for most dogs is 2 mg of CBD per 10 lbs of body weight, given twice daily, eight to twelve hours apart. The typical working range is 1–5 mg per 10 lbs. If you want to adjust, increase by 1 mg per 10 lbs every two weeks — slowly, while you watch how your dog responds.

Dog's Weight Starting Serving Typical Range Chews (5mg each)
Small (10 lbs)~2 mg / serving1–5 mg½ chew
Medium (25 lbs)~5 mg / serving2.5–12.5 mg1 chew
Large (50 lbs)~10 mg / serving5–25 mg2 chews
X-Large (75 lbs)~15 mg / serving7.5–37.5 mg3 chews
Giant (100+ lbs)~20 mg / serving10–50 mg4 chews

Suggested starting amounts only. Twice daily, 8–12 hours apart. Consult your veterinarian — especially if your dog is on medication, is a puppy, or is pregnant/nursing.

Independent third-party lab testing
Quality & Testing

What "triple-tested" actually means.

Every batch is tested by independent third-party labs across three categories: cannabinoid potency (the milligrams on the label match what's in the bottle), purity (no heavy metals, residual solvents, or pesticides), and microbial safety. Certificates of Analysis are publicly available — every batch, every product.

The NASC quality seal means VetCBD is audited by the National Animal Supplement Council against industry quality standards. We've carried it while serving over a million pets since 2015.

Common Questions

Everything dog owners ask before starting.

Is CBD safe for dogs?
CBD derived from hemp is widely considered well-tolerated in dogs when sourced from a reputable, third-party-tested brand. A 2018 Colorado State University study evaluated CBD safety in dogs with favorable safety findings when used as directed. VetCBD products are triple-tested, NASC certified, and formulated by a licensed veterinarian. Always consult your vet before starting — especially if your dog takes other medications.
How much CBD should I give my dog?
Start at 2 mg per 10 lbs of body weight, twice daily, 8–12 hours apart. The typical range is 1–5 mg per 10 lbs. Increase gradually — 1 mg per 10 lbs every two weeks. See the serving table above or the interactive usage calculator, and use the free product consultation if you want a recommendation specific to your dog.
Will CBD make my dog high?
No. Our chews are broad-spectrum with no detectable THC. Our tinctures are full-spectrum with less than 0.3% THC per federal law — an amount included for the entourage effect, not intoxication.
How long does CBD take to work in dogs?
For situational support — fireworks, car rides, vet visits — chews and tinctures typically take effect in 30–60 minutes. For ongoing support like joint comfort, consistent daily use over two to four weeks shows the clearest results.
Chews or tincture — which should I choose?
Chews are pre-measured, peanut-butter flavored, and easiest for situational use and picky dogs. The tincture measures precisely by weight and is the flexible choice for daily wellness routines or multi-pet households. Many owners use both: tincture daily, chews for storms and travel.
Will CBD make my dog drowsy?
Our products are formulated to support calm, not to sedate. Most dogs stay alert and themselves — just more at ease. If your dog seems unusually drowsy, the amount may be too high; reduce and consult your vet.
Can I give my dog CBD every day?
Yes — daily use is the most common pattern, especially for senior dogs and ongoing calm support. Consistency matters more than serving size. Subscribe & Save keeps it stocked at 20% off.
What's the difference between full-spectrum and broad-spectrum?
Full-spectrum hemp extract retains all naturally occurring cannabinoids, including up to 0.3% THC per federal law — supporting the entourage effect. Broad-spectrum has THC removed to non-detectable levels. Our tinctures are full-spectrum; our chews are broad-spectrum.
Why olive oil instead of MCT oil?
Olive oil contains long-chain triglycerides (LCTs), which research suggests support better cannabinoid absorption than the MCT/coconut-oil carriers most brands use. It's also a gentle, well-tolerated base with a long history of safe use in animals.
Will CBD interact with my dog's other medications?
CBD can affect how some medications are metabolized. If your dog is on prescription medication, talk to your veterinarian before starting — our free product consultation can help you coordinate that conversation.
Is it safe for puppies, or pregnant/nursing dogs?
Puppies and pregnant or nursing dogs should only receive supplements under direct veterinary guidance — please consult your vet first. Senior dogs, on the other hand, are one of the most common and best-suited uses for our mobility line.
What if it doesn't work for my dog?
Every order is backed by a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If your dog doesn't respond well, email us and we'll make it right. We'd rather earn your trust than ask for it.
