We’ve heard pet parents describe how CBD helped their pets live a better life. If you’re thinking about using a CBD pet supplement for your furry friend but don’t quite understand which products to choose, we can help.
Understanding that your pet is emotionally distressed or experiencing discomfort is the first sign to take them to a veterinarian. After getting a diagnosis from your veterinarian, you’ll be able to take an integrative approach to help your pet. We all feel bad when our pet’s well-being is at stake, no matter the cause.
Here at VETCBD Hemp, we offer a reputable and transparent brand, with a pet-specific tincture made from full-spectrum, phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil for optimal health benefits.
It may seem confusing with all the news out there about CBD. But, if you’re looking for a natural solution, cannabidiol offers numerous benefits for not only us, but for our pets. It’s a good option for overall wellness, naturally.
Cannabidiol comes from the cannabis plant. It has no intoxicating effect when it has less than 0.3% THC is present in a formulation, which is federally required of all hemp products, so you can rest assured your pet is safe from getting “high.” CBD is a non-psychotropic phytocannabinoid, meaning there’s no high that happens when it’s ingested, and it offers benefits for both humans and pets naturally in the form of tinctures, salves, capsules, and edibles, among many others.
Hemp-based CBD is looked upon as a natural supplement and labeled as such on the nutritional label. CBD may, at times, be labeled as hemp extract. When that is the case, you’ll need to examine the lab results or (COA), and really check the packaging to see if it’s just hemp seed oil you’re getting or if you’re actually getting CBD as part of the formula.
CBD has gained so much popularity recently because cannabidiol works with a pet’s endocannabinoid system to support optimal daily wellness. The endocannabinoid system is involved in a ton of different bodily responsibilities and systems, including the peripheral nerves, brain signals and brain function, and even digestive health. This is why CBD ends up being such a holistically beneficial supplement — it works on a system that seems to be involved in a whole lot of other systems, too!
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a supplement that supports natural wellness, particularly joint health, brain health, and GI health in pets. It’s also great for easing emotional tension and promoting calmness, especially during events that can cause distress such as fireworks celebrations as well as thunderstorms, and it may also help with restlessness caused by being left alone at home during the day or being around too many new people at once.
CBD is also easy to administer, and with VETCBD Hemp’s tincture, you can either administer it directly to your pet by dropping it in their mouth, or you can drop it into their food (which actually results in better absorption, believe it or not!). The CBD takes effect usually between 1 to 2 hours, lasts between 8-12 hours, and can be readministered after 12 hours since the first dose (if needed).
CBD may be good as a daily supplement on the lower dose scale and is generally well tolerated by all pets, but side effects can still be possible, and include lethargy or allergic reaction.
When opting for a CBD oil, opt for a CBD pet product that only uses a high quality carrier oil like our organic extra virgin olive oil, and has been third party lab-tested to be free of pesticides, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and other contaminants.
That said, before using hemp-derived CBD for pets, it’s important to understand that a complete health check-up with your veterinarian to try and get a diagnosis to check for underlying causes of symptoms is key to your pet’s well-being, especially if you find that they are on high alert or restless most of the time even without apparent triggers, seem to be in a lot of discomfort, have frequent GI upset or issues such as diarrhea and vomiting, or don’t seem to be responding to everyday events like they used to.
While there are currently no universal CBD dosing guidelines for animals, you can do some simple math to determine an appropriate dose pet based on your pet’s weight and health, as well as the concentration of the CBD oil.
A good rule of thumb is to begin your pet’s CBD dosage by offering them .2mg of CBD oil per pound of body weight. So, if your pet weighs 10 pounds, you would give them a dosage of 2mg of CBD oil.
It’s always best to start off with a smaller dose to see if it’s enough to bring the benefits you’re looking for, then increase the dose as needed, never surpassing the max dose based on the factors we mentioned above. While CBD is generally well tolerated by pets, you may need less CBD than the standard dose.
The simple math of CBD dosing for pets can be confusing, but we’re happy to provide guidelines for dosing for our own Hemp Tincture in particular, which is available in a 125mg CBD formula (1 fl oz) and a 250mg CBD formula (2 fl oz).
Pet’s Weight | CBD Dosage from Tincture Dropper |
4-10 pounds | .5ml |
10-25 pounds | 1.0ml |
25-50 pounds | 1.5ml |
50-100 pounds | 2.0ml |
Above 100 pounds | 2.5+ml |
