CBD Dose For Pets Based On Size and Type

.

It can be difficult to figure out the correct dosage of CBD to give to your pet if you do not have a frame of reference.

Even more difficult, each company you might buy from could have a different dosing guideline. Different companies use different concentrations of CBD in their oils, so you really have to pay attention to make sure you are dosing your pet accurately.

The dosage you give your pet might also differ depending on the purpose you have for giving your pet CBD — giving a dose to help calm them might look different from the dose you give daily to support their wellness. Giving your pets the correct dosage is important to make sure they can benefit from the formula without getting more than they bargained for (though CBD toxicity doesn’t pose a threat to humans or animals alike — more on that later!).

Your pet’s weight is another factor determining how much CBD to use. Weight may be one of the simpler ways to know how much to give your pet. Some CBD pet product packaging may even give you a chart telling you how much to give your pet based on the pet’s weight.

So, with all of that, how can you know how much CBD to give your cat or dog? Check the packaging that comes with your pet’s CBD and look for any information recommending dosing from the company. If the packaging does not have anything to tell you recommending dosage size, read on for a few guidelines for what to do.

Why Give Your Pet CBD?

Before giving your pet CBD, it is important to understand what CBD is and why you might give it to your dog, cat, or even your horse.

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a compound found in hemp. CBD does not cause the “high” caused by THC, which is the psychoactive component found in the cannabis plant. Instead, CBD interacts with the same parts of the body in different ways, supporting regulatory processes like mood and mobility controlled by our endocannabinoid system, which is part of all mammalian bodies, including humans and our pets!

CBD products are federally legal throughout the USA as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC by concentration, which they usually will, by default, when extracted from hemp plants, which naturally contain this minimal volume of THC.

That said, some states have chosen to override that legality and make it illegal for use within the state — these states include Idaho, South Dakota, and Nebraska.

The research around CBD is ever-growing, but the findings so far for humans and animals alike support that CBD can support overall wellness and well-being, and regular use can be implemented to support a holistic healthy lifestyle.

Pet owners who give their pets CBD often use it for one of a few reasons. CBD is believed to be able to ease feelings of stress and tension in cats and dogs, as well as supporting their emotional wellness, relaxing their moods, and overall helping them to keep them calm

There are multiple reasons you might give your pet CBD. Consulting with your veterinarian will be the best way to know if CBD for your pet is the best solution.

CBD Dosage Estimates By Weight

The best guideline to follow when giving your dog or cat CBD is to start with the lowest dosage possible and see how it affects them. Generally, most pets can tolerate CBD pretty well, but it is better to start low and work your way to find the minimum dose to get maximum benefit, just like we do with human supplements.

A general guideline for measuring CBD dosage for pets is to calculate it proportionally to your pet’s weight.

The recommended CBD dosage for dogs is between 1 to 5 mg per 10 pounds of body weight, but 2 to 4 mg is usually the sweet spot to produce results.

Start with 2 mg/pound and monitor your dog’s progress.

For example, if your dog is 30 lbs, start with about 3 mg doses of CBD twice per day — the second dose is ideal about eight to ten hours after the first dose.

Many CBD oils come in bottles that are 30 ml, and the most frequent amounts of CBD found in these bottles are 250 mg, 500 mg, and 1000 mg. You have to look at how much CBD is in the bottle and calculate dosage accordingly.

For instance, if the bottle is 30 ml and it contains 250 mg of CBD, each ml of oil will contain roughly 8 mg of CBD. Doing these calculations will show you what size dosage your cat or dog needs and will give you a boundary to keep you from giving your pet too much or too little.

After giving your pet the recommended dosage by weight a few times, you may find you need to increase or decrease their dose. Watch their reaction and decide accordingly.

VETCBD Hemp’s CBD Oil and CBD Balm

At VETCBD Hemp, our hemp CBD pet tinctures come in quantities of 125 mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg. Our dosages are easily calculable, as our 125 mg CBD bottles are 1 oz of oil, and our 250 mg CBD bottles are 2 oz of oil. Once you have your pet’s weight measured, you can easily calculate just how much oil will be necessary to accurately dose your pet.

Our tinctures are made from premium quality, full-spectrum CBD. The only other ingredient is organic extra virgin olive oil, and we lab test our products to make sure it holds to our standards of quality and safety.

The hemp used to source our CBD is grown here in America and is rich not only just in CBD, but also in other beneficial phytocannabinoids like CBG and CBC. Following the current CBD legislation, every batch of CBD we produce is extracted to contain less than 0.3% THC by concentration.

Giving your pet our CBD tincture can provide them with a number of benefits.

We suggest the tincture be used to:

  • Support joint mobility
  • Support normal brain function
  • Help maintain normal GI health
  • Help keep your pet calm

We also offer a hemp balm that can be applied topically to support your pet. This balm can work to promote healthy skin with organic extra virgin olive oil and beeswax. Additional suggested uses are for supporting minor skin irritations, targeting local inflammation, and promoting overall skin health.

We believe it is our duty to shatter misinformation about the benefits of cannabis. Our team has over 40 years of combined veterinary experience, and we are all dedicated to helping you improve the quality of life of your pet.
